Join Stanford Club of Hong Kong on an exclusive tour of H Queen’s, a new award-winning commercial development on 80 Queen’s Road Central named “Hong Kong’s Most Important Gallery District..in a Brand New 26-Story Skyscraper” by international art publication Artsy.

H Queen’s, developed by Henderson Land, is the new purpose-built multistorey cultural and lifestyle building that is transforming the dynamic right in Central, Hong Kong. H Queen’s houses exhibitions spaces, including few of the top international art galleries for promoting the arts as well as expanding the audience for art. Dan Schwartz, Dean of the School of Education & Lloyd Minor, Dean of the School of Medicine

Join the Stanford Club of HK for a very special Stanford evening, featuring a high energy performance by the Stanford Mendicants, Stanford’s original A Capella group. They will be singing the best songs of today, yesterday, and several decades ago.

The Mendicants will be immediately followed by a thought-provoking conversation with Dean Dan Schwartz and Dean Lloyd Minor discussing Stanford’s Vision for the Future.  In 2017, Stanford kicked off a long-range planning effort to identify and guide focus against challenges and areas of opportunity in the upcoming years. Nearly 3,000 ideas were submitted for consideration, and teams have spent hundreds of hours pouring over them.

Join us as we reminisce through music and learn about the future! Appetizers and drinks will also be served. Hope to see you there!

SPEAKER BIOS

Daniel L. Schwartz is the I. James Quillen Dean and Nomellini & Olivier Professor of Educational Technology at the Stanford Graduate School of Education (GSE). An expert in human learning and educational technology, Schwartz oversees a laboratory whose computer-focused developments in science and math instruction permit original research into fundamental questions of learning. He has taught math in rural Kenya, English in south-central Los Angeles, and multiple subjects in Kaltag, Alaska. This diversity of experience informs his work. Among many honors, Schwartz was named Graduate School of Education Teacher of the Year for 2015. His latest book, The ABCs of How We Learn: 26 Scientifically Proven Approaches, How They Work and When to Use Them, distills learning theories into practical solutions for use at home or in the classroom. NPR noted the book among the “best reads” for 2016.

Lloyd B. Minor, MD, is a scientist, surgeon, and academic leader. He is the Carl and Elizabeth Naumann Dean of the Stanford University School of Medicine, a position he has held since December 2012. As dean, Dr. Minor plays an integral role in setting strategy for the clinical enterprise of Stanford Medicine, an academic medical center that includes the Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford Health Care, and Stanford Children’s Health and Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford. He also oversees the quality of Stanford Medicine’s physician practices and growing clinical networks. An advocate for innovation, Dr. Minor has provided significant support for fundamental science and for clinical and translational research at Stanford. Through bold initiatives in medical education and increased support for PhD students, Dr. Minor is committed to inspiring and training future leaders.

About Dr. Joyce Samoutou-Wong

Dr. Joyce Samoutou-Wong BSc (Hons) MBChB DRCOG DTMH MRCGP and her husband Henri are the founding directors of the charity New Sight Eye Care, and the 2012 winners of the Excellence in Ophthalmology Vision Award (XOVA). Joyce, a recipient of the Women of Hope Award (2017), has been involved in several humanitarian projects across the globe, including running a mobile clinic and creating a successful first aid program along the ancient Silk Road in Uzbekistan.

An inspirational and sought-after speaker known for her sincerity and natural ability to make the audience both laugh and cry, Joyce has been invited to speak in several countries to audiences such as the Royal Geographic Society and Harvard Club. In 2017, the Samoutous were invited to the Forbes Philanthropy Summit in New York.

Joyce, a Hong Kong native, graduated from Diocesan Girls’ School and received the Hong Kong Outstanding Students’ Award before winning a full scholarship to study at the United World College of the Atlantic in the UK. She then read medicine at the University of Edinburgh, which was followed by a stint as a visiting fellow at Harvard University.

The meaningful work of Joyce and Henri has been featured in the BBC and South China Morning Post, and was the subject of a documentary series by Cable TV.

About New Sight:

New Sight transforms lives by giving the priceless gift of sight.

In 2006, Joyce and Henri Samoutou relocated from the UK to develop a non-profit eye centre in a missionary hospital in the rainforest of Gabon. The eye centre has since become self-sufficient and continues to help around 6000 patients a year. In 2012, they founded New Sight Eye Care, and together with their three young children, moved to the jungle in the Republic of Congo to pioneer its first non-profit eye centre with surgery.

New Sight provides comprehensive non-profit eye services, including consultations, glasses fitting, medical and surgical treatments, as well as free screening and community eye care education. It also empowers the local community by training nurses and administrative staff.

New Sight is currently working towards a new eye hospital in the town of Ouesso, where the strategic location will extend its reach to the whole of Congo, as well as neighbouring countries.

From Big Data Pioneer to Stanford Engineering Dean in the age of AI

The Stanford Club of Hong Kong is delighted to welcome Dean Jennifer Widom, Dean of Stanford’s School of Engineering, as our honorable speaker at this breakfast.

Dean Widom has been a pioneering computer scientist in databases and big data before the term big data was coined. Her research group’s contribution to software in the public domain has had a large impact on industry in both data management and analysis tools.

In an age where not just engineering disciplines but practically all disciplines are being transformed by AI and big data, Dean Widom will share with us the latest happenings and strategic direction of Stanford’s School of Engineering.

This event should be interesting not just to folks working in technology and engineering, but also to folks from business or any field interested in AI, big data and the future of technology.

About the Speaker

Dean Jennifer Widom is the Frederick Emmons Terman Dean of the School of Engineering and the Fletcher Jones Professor in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Stanford University. She served as Computer Science Department Chair from 2009-2014 and School of Engineering Senior Associate Dean from 2014-2016.

Dean Widom received her Bachelor’s degree from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music in 1982 and her Computer Science Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1987. She was a Research Staff Member at the IBM Almaden Research Center before joining the Stanford faculty in 1993.

Her research interests span many aspects of nontraditional data management. She is an ACM Fellow and a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts & Sciences; she received the ACM-W Athena Lecturer Award in 2015, the ACM SIGMOD Edgar F. Codd Innovations Award in 2007, and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2000.

The Cardinal are red hot! After starting the season 1-2, we’ve won 8 of our last 9 games and defeated #9 Notre Dame 38-20 over Thanksgiving weekend with an incredible 4 touchdowns from Costello and now 1800+ rushing yards this season from Bryce Love (in Stanford history only Toby Gerhart and Christian McCaffrey have accomplished this feat). We now advance to the Pac-12 Championship game against the USC Trojans!

This should be a good, close game. We trounced USC 41-22 in the 2015 Pac-12 title game, and if last week’s performance is any guide the Trojans lost to Notre Dame 49-14 on Oct. 21^st. But the Trojans did beat us earlier this season 42-24…wayyy back on Sep. 9.

There will be plenty Trojans also in attendance at the viewing, so c’mon HK Cardinal fans! Let’s rally early and be prepared to cheer with gusto as we go for our 16^th Pac-12 Championship!
