Panelists:

Jessica Lam, Co-Founder of Jou Sun

A beloved local favorite, Jou Sun is a marketplace that enables customers to buy groceries directly from brands, organic farmers, and specialty importers from around the world. By enabling source-to-kitchen ordering and delivery, they are purveyors of top quality groceries at unbeatable prices.

A graduate of Columbia Business School and Brown University, Jessica was previously trained as a luxury retail business analyst, hedge fund analyst and management consultant before setting out to disrupt the grocery world.

Brian Lo, General Manager of Deliveroo

Noted for its familiar Kangaroo logo, Deliveroo is a British food-tech and logistics company with fast-growing operations around the world. Its mission is to bring the world’s local restaurants into everyone’s doorsteps within 30 minutes – all the while building a top-notch logistics company in F&B.

Brian is a graduate of the Wharton School and had extensive experience at McKinsey & Company in Hong Kong and New York before venturing into the startup world.

Theodore Ma, Managing Director, MaBelle

Well-known by Hong Kongers and globetrotters alike, MaBelle is a leading jewellery retailer offering customers outstanding quality and valuable diamond jewellery. They are in the midst of building a network of 1 million salespoints across the globe with the aim of disrupting the entire jewellery retail market. MaBelle.com and its related brands current operate on 25 online platforms reaching customers in over 76 countries and 400 cities.

A graduate of Stanford University, Theodore has been developing his family’s jewellery retail network and wholesale business, successfully extending them to the online world. He is also co-founder of CoCoon, which runs a vibrant co-working space and supports startups in Hong Kong.

Ed Tam, CEO, HelloToby

Toby is Asia’s fastest-growing marketplace for services. From carpet cleaning to computer repair, violin and tap dance lessons to pet-sitting and party clowns, HelloToby connects people with service needs to Pros with skills. It currently has over 300 types of services available and over HK$ 5M worth of jobs available per month.

Ed is a graduate of the London School of Economics and holds a MA Service Design from the Royal College of Art. He has had an illustrious global career in the creative industries, with leadership roles in top agencies including TBWA and Mindshare. He is currently also the Chief Design Officer of New Frontier, a venture builder in Hong Kong.

Gavin Yeung, Founder/CEO, Cryptomover

Cryptomover is a Hong-Kong based company working on fully compliant crypto-index funds. Cryptomover is currently in the 500 Startups accelerator and has also received funding from the HK Government. Cryptomover received the Excellent Enterprise Award in Demo China earlier this year.

Gavin has a passion for automated trading strategies and making cryptocurrency investing easier. He believes in the power of distributed computing / ledger technologies and is a founding member of the Bitcoin Associated of HK. He received a M.S. and B.S. from UCLA in Computer Science and an M.B.A. from University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Carol has served in various leadership roles at Phoenix Satellite Television Limited, and is currently the Producer and Host of “Visionaries,” her own interview show with global business leaders and ground-breaking entrepreneurs and innovators. She is also the Assistant Chief Editor of Phoenix Infonews Channel, a 24-hour news channel.

Carol received her undergraduate degree from Stanford University and a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard Kennedy School.

The Diocesan Boys’ School is one of the most prestigious boys’ schools in Hong Kong. Mr. Ronnie Cheng became the 10th headmaster of the school. About the Speaker

Mr. Ronnie Kay-Yen Cheng is the 10th Headmaster of the Diocesan Boys’ School. He is committed to developing students of holistic excellence and providing an open and liberal platform for every student to discover their unique calling. A staunch proponent of amalgamation of International and local pedagogy, Mr. Cheng was responsible for the implementation of the International Baccalaureate curriculum alongside the local national curriculum at his school. Through the years, Mr. Cheng developed initiatives to develop the students’ all-round competence through Leadership Training, Life-Planning, Faith based Character Building and service programmes.

Before being appointed headmaster, Mr. Cheng served as the deputy headmaster at DBS, overseeing the IB curriculum and Extra Curricular activities. He also taught English and was Head of Music. As an established conductor, Mr. Cheng led his ensembles to consecutive World Championships and No. 1 World rankings for Male Choirs. Mr. Cheng received his M.Ed. at the University of Hong Kong and M. Mus. at the University of Illinois.

Active in support of the community, Mr. Cheng serves as the Chairman of the Grant Schools Council, Executive Committee member of the HK Schools Music and Speech Association, Council member of the Academy for Performing Arts and the Diocesan Girls’ School, Vice-Chairman of the Hong Kong Tennis Association, and Steering Committee member of the Hong Kong Scholarship for Excellence Scheme.

This year, Mr. Cheng was awarded the Global Teacher Prize as one of the top 50 educators in the world.

Prof Tze Leung Lai is Ray Lyman Wilbur Professor of Statistics and, by courtesy, of Health Research and Policy in the School of Medicine and of the Institute for Computational & Mathematical Engineering (ICME) in the School of Engineering. He is Director of the Financial and Risk Modeling Institute, Codirector of the Biostatistics Core of the Stanford Cancer Institute, and Codirector of the Center for Innovative Study Design at the Stanford School of Medicine. He has held regular and visiting faculty appointments at Columbia University-School of Medicine, UC Berkeley, and Nankai University, and holds advisory positions with the University of Hong Kong, Peking University, and Tsinghua University. He receives his BA degree with first class honors from University of Hong Kong and his MA and PhD degree from Columbia University.

Save the date: Ming Gor (明哥) Food Giving Service Outing to the underrepresented and disadvantaged people in Sham Shui Po

In 2011, Ming Gor’s Pei Ho Barbecue Restaurant, providing affordable meals to Sham Shui Po’s grassroots, was on the brink of closing down. Thankfully, a TV program’s report on the restaurant turned their fate around.

In response, Ming Gor decided to devote a portion of profits towards distributing boxed meals to the homeless & elderly. To date, 1,100 free boxed meals are distributed weekly on Thursday and Saturday & 50,000 people are involved in volunteering.

The Bing Overseas Studies Program (BOSP) https://undergrad.stanford.edu/programs/bosp is Stanford’s overseas studies program. Over half of Stanford students choose to study abroad during their undergraduate careers, carrying on a tradition that began in 1958.  

Professor Ramon Saldivar is the Burke Family Director of BOSP, Hoagland Professor of Humanities & Sciences, Bass University Fellow in Undergraduate Education, Professor of English & Comparative Literature and Professor, by courtesy, of Iberian & Latin American Cultures.

Ms. Irene Kennedy is an Associate Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education and for the last 16 years also served as Executive Director of BOSP.
