Finding your passion – how Lily Fan went from corporate law to Broadway

The Stanford Club of Hong Kong is delighted to welcome Tony Award-winning, Broadway musical producer Lily Fan as our honorable speaker at this luncheon. The event is co-organized with the Yale Club of Hong Kong.

Lily founded Scandobean Productions in 2010 and won her first Tony Award for Best New Musical as a Co-Producer on Hadestown. Coming up in the Fall of 2019, Lily is excited to participate in the production of Sisters In Law, an adaptation of the NYTimes best selling book about the friendship between Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

Born and raised in Hong Kong, Lily will share her journey of career transformation, from a corporate lawyer at Shearman & Sterling and Morrison & Foerster, to becoming one of Broadway’s most successful producers.

About the Speaker

Lily founded Scandobean Productions LLC in 2010 because of her belief that the entertainment sphere is the best medium to inspire thinking, educate and forge differences by changing the way people understand the world and view one another.

In the 2018-9 season, Lily won her first Tony Award for Best New Musical as a Co-Producer on Hadestown. Hadestown also received Tony’s in 7 other categories for a total of 8 awards. Lily was also represented on Broadway in Network starring Bryan Cranston (who received a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play). She has also proudly supported the Broadway productions of box office smash hit The Boys in the Band (2019 Tony Award winner for Best Revival of a Play), To Kill A Mockingbird (2019 Tony Award winner), Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of The Temptations (2019 Tony Award winner), and The Waverly Gallery (2019 Tony Award winner).

Coming up in the Fall of 2019, Lily is excited to participate in the production of Sisters In Law, an adaptation of the NYTimes best selling book about the friendship between Sandra Day O’Connor and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The show will begin performances at the Wallis Annenberg Center for The Performing Arts in Beverly Hills, California.

Lily was previously represented on Broadway in 2015 by the Tony-nominated dark comedy Hand To God, which transferred to the West End in 2016.  The play was nominated for 4 Tonys and an Olivier Award and is the most produced new play in the U.S. in the 2016-17 season.  Lily’s other Broadway credits include: the Tony-nominated revival of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Jesus Christ Superstar, David Henry Hwang’s Chinglish on Broadway and its first international tour, and the 2014 revival of the timeless romantic play Love Letters by A.R. Gurney.  Her Off-Broadway credits include The Other Josh Cohen (NYTimes Critics’ Pick), Here Lies Love (NYTimes Critics’ Pick), and Miss Abigail’s Guide to Dating and Mating.   She has also proudly supported the productions of 10 Tony-winner The Band’s Visit, 2 Tony-winner Beautiful, Pulitzer Prize winner Sweat,  Tony-winner Indecent, Tony-winner The Mountaintop, Tony-winner Three Tall Women, Iceman Cometh, box office smash hit The Addams Family (The National and International Tour), Something Rotten (Broadway & National Tour), An American In Paris (National Tour & West End), If/Then, The Last Ship, Ann, 1984, and many more.

She is a graduate of Yale College and Yale Law School.   She was born in Hong Kong and speaks fluent Cantonese.  Besides producing, Lily also has a real estate business and mediates family, entertainment, and other contract disputes.  Lily was previously a lawyer at the law firms of Shearman & Sterling LLP and Morrison & Foerster LLP; specializing in white collar criminal litigation and securities class actions.

About the Speakers

Dr. Peter Fitzgerald is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Triventures. He brings decades of experience as a leading interventional cardiologist, start-up founder and venture capitalist. Recognizing the emergence of Israel as a leader in healthcare innovation, he co-founded Triventures and is active in cultivating connections between Triventures portfolio companies, industry leaders and healthcare systems around the world. Peter heads the U.S. Triventures office in Menlo Park and travels to Israel monthly.

Peter currently serves as the Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Technology and Director of the Cardiovascular Core Analysis Laboratory (CCAL) at Stanford University Medical School. He is an Interventional Cardiologist and holds a PhD in Engineering. He is Professor Emeritus in both the Departments of Medicine and Engineering at Stanford. In addition, he heads the Stanford/Asia MedTech innovation program.

Peter has been principle/founder of twenty-one medical device companies and transitioned fourteen of these start-ups to large medical device companies. Prior to co- founding Triventures, Peter co-founded LVP Capital in San Francisco in 2001, which focused on medical device and biotechnology investments. He has additionally served as a Partner for BioStar Ventures and TransPacific Venture Partners.

Peter has led or participated in over 175 clinical trials, published over 550 manuscripts/chapters, lectures worldwide and is considered a worldwide thought leader on the future trends in healthcare. He has been a consultant for the FDA for the past 15 years focused on medical technology and more recently is one of the FDA’s lead advisors on its digital health strategy. He serves on several boards of directors. Peter is a special advisor to C-level multinational medtech, digital health and consumer electronics multinationals.

Michal Geva is the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Triventures and brings over 20 years of experience in medtech and digital health in Israel and the U.S. She co-founded Triventures in 2009 to provide what was then missing in the ecosystem- a deep understanding of commercial integration of innovative technologies into the healthcare system. Triventures was one of the first funds in to focus on digital health in Israel and Michal was the first woman to found and manage a venture capital firm in Israel. Since founding Triventures, Michal has grown the fund into a multi-stage investment platform and industry leader.

Prior to launching Triventures, Michal served for many years in the healthcare start-up ecosystem and held multiple executive positions with GI View, Advanced Stent Technologies (acquired by Boston Scientific), ByPass, TriReme Medical (IPO) and others. Michal ran several business departments from operations to regulatory and marketing and helped scale and steer the companies towards successful exits.

In 2017, Michal was recognized as one of the 50 most influential women in Israel by Globes, Israel’s leading financial journal and in 2011 she was recognized as one of the 40 most promising leaders in Israel by The Marker, Israel’s leading business journal.

With a hands-on approach, Michal is involved in all the fund’s major decisions, leads investments and serves as an active board member in the majority of the portfolio companies.

Thank you to many of you for joining the club’s Annual General Meeting on Tuesday May 21 at CoCoon.

At the AGM, alumni attendees voted yes for the executive committee and general committee members for 2019/20 listed here. In addition, attendees voted to approve amendments to the club’s Articles of Association.

The amended and currently-in-effect Articles of Association provides an updated, robust governance framework for the club. The project scope was defined as a review and update of the club’s Articles of Association to reflect present day practice and ensure compliance with Hong Kong law. We would like to offer our sincere thank you to Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, who helped the club in this matter on a pro bono basis.

In addition, we would like to thank the following alumni for leading efforts to amend the Articles: in alphabetical order by last name, Edith Ngan Chan, Anthony Chang, Christina Hu Ho, Edith Law Kong, and Theodore Ma.

Introduction:

Professor James O. Leckie is the C. L. Peck (Class of 1906) Professor of Environmental Engineering at Stanford University and is a member of U.S. National Academy of Engineering. Professor Leckie started teaching in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Stanford University since 1971, and he is currently also the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development & Global Competitiveness at Stanford University. Over the years, Professor Leckie’s research contributions have been extensively advanced the areas of environmental chemistry, human exposure, water technology, and sustainable urban development. His recent work uses computational learning and optimization tools to better design smart physical infrastructure (transportation systems, urban water systems), and facilitate a class of social services, such as knowledge management for social innovation, to integrate social functionality into urban communities. In this reception, Professor Leckie will share some of his views and information on the current development of the university. It is also a great opportunity to casually interact with alumni from all different industries in Hong Kong.

Dr. Ng is a globally recognized pioneer in online education (as co-founder of Coursera) and thought leader in AI (as former chief scientist at Baidu and former founding lead of the Google Brain team). In 2013, he was named to the Time 100 list of the most influential persons in the world.

In 2017, Dr. Ng built deeplearning.ai, an AI oriented education platform, as well as Landing.AI, a company that aims to help enterprises transform for the age of artificial intelligence.

About the Speaker

Dr. Andrew Ng is a globally recognized leader in AI (Artificial Intelligence). He has helped two of the world’s leading technology companies in their “AI transformation”: He was Chief Scientist at Baidu, where he led the company’s ~1300 person AI Group and was responsible for driving the company’s global AI strategy and infrastructure. He was also the founding lead of the Google Brain team.

Dr. Ng is also Co-Chairman and Co-founder of Coursera, the world’s leading MOOC (Massive Open Online Courses) platform, and an Adjunct Professor at Stanford University’s Computer Science Department. In 2017, Dr. Ng built deeplearning.ai, an AI oriented education platform, as well as Landing.AI, a company that aims to help enterprises transform for the age of artificial intelligence.
